ABSTRACT
The art and craft of fashion design is a conscious creative effort. Since mankind recognized the need and importance of wearing clothing, the role of the fashion designer has come to take prominence in making quality and comfortable designs. Nigeria which has recently been known not only for her fashionable textiles and garments, but also for her creative fashion designers who have increasingly gained international recognition and awards. The Nigeria fashion industry has come to be recognized as a major player in promoting our cultural values and heritage as well as contribute to the country's GDP. The past couple of years have witnessed a proliferation of young creative and dynamic fashion designers who are bold and daring in promoting new waves and ideas within the fashion space. Amongst the new fashion wave is Distressed fashion and it’s sister torn or ripped denim. What actually started as a rebellious movement by the youths in the early 1990’s in the United States of America and later spread to Europe, soon found it foot landing across Africa and Nigeria in particular. Using the qualitative and experimental research methodology, through careful observation and consultation of relevant literature, it was discovered that there is a vast economic potential in designing distressed fashion. Even as Nigeria fashion designers have developed creative designs by incorporating a variety of colours, fabrics, and embellishments (often beads) to distinguish our indigenous designs and concept from the foreign ones. Further findings revealed that so many persons across ethnic and religious divide in Nigeria are totally against distressed fashion. Some give outright negative profiling of wearers of distressed fashion as irresponsible. Against the backdrop of the above, the researcher attempts to use this academic endeavour to correct general misconception and disabuse the minds of the people from classifying distressed fashion as irresponsible and inappropriate style of dressing.
