ABSTRACT

The main purpose of this research was to investigate the drama of Ola Rotimi as historical documents with emphasis on Kurunmi and Ovoramwen Nogbaisi. This study determines how the plays reviewed could be relied on as documents of history. The primary data was collected through textual analysis of the reviewed plays. The study observed that Rotimi deployed history in both plays for various reasons, to make a statement on the leadership in Nigeria with Kurunmi, and to correct the received Europe Authored version of the events that preceded the late 19th century Benin massacre. The study also observed that certain criticisms of Rotimi deployment of historical materials are predicted on the wrong reading of the playwright’s vision by the critics. This study therefore recommended that in order to determine the plays validity and reliability as historical documents, the plays accounts should be placed side by side with other historical records of the same events.
