ABSTRACT

The study examined the correlates of cybercrime and academic performance among university of Benin students. The objective of the study was to examine the effect of cyber-crime on academic performance of University of Benin Undergraduates; find out the factors causing University of Benin Undergraduates to be involved in cybercrime; find out the consequences of cyber-crime on university of Benin undergraduates academic achievement; discuss  the strategies for reducing cyber-crime among University of  Benin Undergraduates and to examine the role of social workers on the fight against cybercrime among undergraduate students in the university of Benin, Edo state.

The cross sectional research design was adopted for this study. 243 copies of questionnaire were distributed to 243 respondents in the University of Benin, Benin City. Data collected were analyzed using frequency count, percentages and mean, with the aid of the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 24.0.

The empirical result revealed was revealed that students/ have knowledge of cybercrime and other internet related issues; that accessibility of technology is one of the major factors responsible for student involvement in cybercrime; that poverty and unemployment, peer influence and frustration are active factors that lead to cybercrime.   The study recommends that the government do more in terms of creating job opportunities or platforms where youths can acquire entrepreneurial skills to build a career for themselves and that government should enact stringent laws against cybercrime and ensure that violators are punished accordingly without discrimination.
