ABSTRACT
The convergence between psychosis and animism is investigated within the novels Freshwater and The Famished Road in a bid to uncover the portrayal of the interplay between reality and the supernatural. Employing a qualitative research method as well as the combination of psychoanalytical theory and animist theory, this study explores the experiences of the characters in both literary works. Focusing on specific examples from each novel that illustrate the way these concepts are intertwined it is found that spirituality and cultural beliefs play an integral part in understanding the nature of the human psyche. As such, this study concludes that indigenous culture play an important role in diagnosing of mental illness.
