ABSTRACT

The linguistic prowess of names is one that is very prominent among Africans, the culture way of life, situations and conventions are all embedded in most names in Africa, names are used to communicate virtues and situation surrounding the birth of a child. This study hence is an attempt to carry out an analysis on various names of God in Omono language, the data for this study was collected through oral interview method, and translated accordingly, the contextual theory o f analysis was adopted as the theoretical frame work of the study, the theory postulate how it is are used as analytical to bring out the context of usage of the data. The meaning of the names, situations surrounding the naming and spiritual implication of each names were examined. The analysis revealed that names of God in Omono language bears great linguistics symbol of communication for these people, these names are not names, they communicate meaning and carries great spiritual effect, these names are not just names but have spiritual implications. These names cannot be uttered in their forms as the serve as a means of spiritual communication between God and humans, they serve as prayers, thanksgiving, worship, honor, request and praises to God, if the forms of these names are changed, the linguistics and spiritual benefit of these names are defeated. Great respect are also shown to this names as they are not just seen as mere names but are seen as God Himself, no one could be found using these names in negative acts, if God is to be respected then these names should be. These names are also used to name individual so as to communicate the situation surrounding their birth and as a symbol of God’s manifestation in their live.
