Abstract
Recently, various plant parts and other plant constituents have been researched for their potential as drug sources and for medical purposes. One such plant with a long history of use is Simarouba glauca. Strong national systems that keep an eye on drug manufacture and quality worldwide. Simarouba glauca leaves are well known for treating a variety of diseases and disorders. Wistar male rats were used as the study's specimens.
L-NAME/ Streptozotocin was used to induce the wistar rats with diabetes mellitus. However, the Simarouba glauca leaf extract has antidiabetic effect,.Wistar male rats were used as specimen in this study, the leaves of Simarouba glauca were dried, grinded and soaked with methanol after 72hours, then sieved and concentrated to obtain the methanolic extract of Simarouba glauca plant used for the treatment of diabetes mellitus, the rats were grouped into eight (8) groups. Each rats were fed with feed and induced with L-NAME/Streptozotocin except those in group 1 which is the positive control group. Group 2 were administered L-NAME/streptozotocin, Group 3 was given L-NAME/streptozotocin and treated with losartan/metformin, group 4 was given L-NAME/streptozotocin and treated with losartan/glibenclamide, Group 5 was given L-NAME/streptozotocin and treated with hydromethanol extract (25mg/kg body weight), Group 6 was given L-NAME/streptozotocin and treated with hydromethanol extract (50mg/kg body weight), Group 7 was given L-NAME/streptozotocin and treated with acetone extract (25mg/kg body weight), while Group 8 was given L-NAME/streptozotocin and treated with acetone extract (50mg/kg body weight). The tissues were thereafter harvested into sample bottles, homogenized and used immediately to carry out the experiment.
The analysis of systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, mean arterial pressure, heart rate was done on the heart to check the effect of L-NAME/streptozotocin induction and treatment by co-administration with losartan/metformin or losartan/glibenclamide can treat the rats, body weight analysis was also done in this regard.
Treatment of L-NAME/STZ-induced diabetes by co-administration of losartan/metformin has anti-hypertensive properties, while treatment of L-NAME/STZ-induced diabetes by co-administration of losartan/glibenclamide has anti-diabetic properties.
