ABSTRACT
The study examined the challenges faced by elderly persons in Utekon Community, Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. The study adopted a cross-sectional design. The population of the study was 229,000 with an age range of 24 years and above. A sample size of 400 participants was adopted in the study, the instrument used for this study was a multi-staged questionnaire after which the data were analyzed to centralize the opinions of all the correspondence. The study established that elderly person in Utekon community faces a number of challenges in coping with functional physical and psychosocial health status of the aging process, it was also founded that the elderly is that they prefer receiving help from family members, thus mediums should be created by family members to assist the aged among them, even though the community have some roles to play in ensuring the social and emotional wellbeing of the aged. And also the percentage of poverty should be reduced to foster hope and happiness, self-esteem and sense of personal competence. It was also recommended that at the community level, senior citizens should be involved in some generational extra-curricular activities with the youth, with the future outlook for changing the awful state experienced by the aged it is expedient that the educational system develop training protocols for children, adolescents and young adults about challenges associated with the physical and psychosocial processes of aging, so they can adequately prepare themselves towards the phase of ageing.
