Abstract

Given the universally acclaimed status of education being the bedrock of development one shouldn't have to look far to determine that the major cause of underdevelopment in Africa  including Nigeria is a result of poor policy implementation on education or a lack of effective implementation where good policies are made. It is important to probe if the challenge of public policy have any effect on the standard of education in Edo state. Questions such as, does the challenge of public policy have any effect on standard of education in the state? And what has been the role of Edo state government on the improvement of educational standard on the state.Basically, for this research study an historical research design and descriptive research design are used, Historical research design attempts to inquire into events, developments and experiences of issues in the pass. While descriptive research attempts to describe issues and events as it occur.

Based on the data collected and analysed, a lot of factors which are outside the four walls of the school contributed to the challenges of public policy on the standard of education in Edo State.

The results from this study shows that while parents in Edo State are deliberate about getting quality education for their children and wards, the quality of Education available in the state is not World standard. It also shows there’s still a gulf between in the quality of education gotten from public and private schools.

This study further showed that the government in the state play the highest role in determining the quality of education in secondary schools, however, a lack of proper implementation of government policies is a major limiting factor in the standard of education in the state. This study shows that the governments policies on education in the last few years has positively impacted the standard of education in the state and if they continue to thoroughly implement their policies, secondary school education in the state will soon be world standard.

Recommendations from this research includes that the government should thoroughly monitor and implement its educational policies as this is a major factor that impacts the quality of education

The state government should ensure that infrastructure, laboratories and teaching equipment are adequately distributed throughout the state.
