ABSTRACT
The study aimed at examining the challenges of effective teaching and learning of history in some selected schools in Esan Central, local Government Area of Edo state. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The following were critically considered: the state of History in secondary school in Esan Central local Government Area of Edo state, the problems observed among students in secondary schools in learning of History in Esan Central, the existing challenges of history teaching in secondary schools in Esan Central, the behavior of teachers towards the teaching of History and how the students are responding to the teachings. A total of 80 students were randomly selected from four(4) schools in Esan Central L.G.A of Edo state. The simple random sampling technique was used as the research design, the data gotten was analyzed using frequency count percentage, mean and frequency table. From the result gotten it is noticeable that students show little or no interest towards the subjects and the policy makers in education have key roles to play for the subject to regain its place in secondary schools. To this regard the policy makers in education should make the subject compulsory and awareness campaign should be staged and scholarship should be given to students in History subject like in other subjects, this will make students show interest in the subject.
