ABSTRACT

This research investigated the challenge militating home economic as a subject in junior secondary School in Oredo local government, Edo state. The purpose of this study was to identify the extent of challenges faced in the implementation of Home Economics as a subject in junior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, to examine the extent of the impact of these challenges on the teaching and learning of Home Economics and to explore the extent of perceptions of teachers, students, and parents regarding the importance and relevance of Home Economics in the curriculum. A descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. Secondary school students were used. The sampling techniques used for the study was total of (120) students enumeration sampling Technique. A questionnaire was designed and titled the challenge militating home economic as a subject in junior secondary School in Oredo local government, Edo state. A total of 120 copies of questionnaire were administered and 120 copies were duly completed, returned and found useable for this study. The instrument was subjected to face validation by the supervisor. Analyses and discussions of data collected for this study were descriptively done using mean, and standard deviation. The findings of the study shows that Several challenges such as outdated instructional material, lack of availability of instructional material, lack of available funding and resources, lack of integrating technology and modern method of teaching into home economic largely contribute to the implementation of Home Economics as a subject in junior secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Several challenges affect the teaching and learning of Home Economics to a high extent. And teachers, students, and parents perceived that food security and environment sustainability, potential careers, personal development and informed decision about nutrition, health and wellness contribute to the importance and relevance of Home Economics in the curriculum to a high extent.
