THE CHALLENGES AND DYNAMICS OF MANAGEMENT AND ADMINISTRATION IN THE NATIONAL ARTS THEATRE IGANMU LAGOS

ABSTRACT

Nigeria is one of the countries that took a cue from the palace of culture and sports in Varna, Bulgaria to set up an Art institution. The result was the birth of the National Arts Theatre which was established to capture, preserve and project the culture of the Nigeria people. Since it’s establishment in 1976, the institution has been fraught with numerous problems that are inimical to it’s functionality and continued cooperate existence. Scholars have predicted in multiple occasions that arts organization in Nigeria are at the verge of collapse. One of this arts organization is the National Arts Theatre. Been a complex art, the theatre is an integral platform for the preservation and presentation of various be culture and arts forms in Nigeria. It deals with man, his society and struggle for survival. Theatre is substantial, liberating, imaginative and demanding and thus theatre production demands creativity and rigor. In the light of this, the success of any theatre organization is dependent on the combine efforts of the human and material resources of the theatre. It is the responsibility of the human resources, the artistic and non artistic staff to coordinate the theatre organization in a harmonious amalgam. This responsibility resonate the need for a harmonizer, nay a management board. Against the backdrop of the above, this study constituted an inquest into the challenges and dynamics of  the National Arts Theatre as an institution. The research endeavour is divided into five chapters which attempts to exhume the challenges and dynamics of management and administration by giving an extensive discussion on the theme of dual leadership, poor funding by relevant authority, abuse of office and misplaced goal priorities.
