ABSTRACT
The study investigates the challenges and adjustment patterns of the elderly within the Benin Metropolis of Edo State. Moreover, the study explores the relationship between challenges and adjustment patterns of the elderly, as gender differentiation in their challenges and experiences, and gender difference in the level of adjustment patterns among them in Benin Metropolis. The limited access to healthcare services among others for older persons and their families who needs support when considering the end of life and applicable adaptive strategies to enhance personal functioning and well-being within the limited space and resources. Policy implications and recommendations for constructive interventions to enhance awareness of challenges of aging and ageing management. Adopting mixed methods approach, data were collected through survey and interviews with elderly people in Benin Metropolis. Findings indicate several challenges and adjustment patterns in older persons among different demographic groups, influenced by factors such as education, occupation, living arrangement, lifestyle, and access to healthcare services, etc. The social worker and healthcare professionals need to increase the awareness on the need for individuals and people to prepare for their aging process and its management. The social workers should ensure to collaborate with healthcare agencies, communities, learning institutions at various levels, and non-governmental organizations to educate and advocacy for older persons, preparation for old age from holistic perception and approaches in the metropolis and mega society.
