SUMMARY
The study was anchored on the “cognitive theory of depression”. The Cognitive theory was developed by Aaron Beck at the University of Pennsylvania (Sanderson, 2003). This theory is based on cognitive therapy which focuses on cognitive restructuring (CR), examining unwanted thoughts, attitudes, and beliefs (called cognitive processes) (Sanderson, 2003). Beck found that depressed people process information in negative ways. They use internal conversation that communicates self-blame and self-criticism. The basic premise of cognitive therapy is that thoughts and beliefs have the greatest impact on emotions and behaviors.
The method adopted in this study is the survey and descriptive analysis, which provided general impressions, summary of observations and findings made from the data collected through the administration of questionnaires on the selected respondents. The methodology provided tools for the analysis of the causes of depression among university students and social worker intervention a case study of University of Benin.
