ABSTRACT

The study was to investigate the causes and perceived effects of inadequate sleep among teachers in secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City, Edo State. Three research questions were raised to guide the researcher. Various literatures were reviewed to the study.

Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. The population of the study of all 660 teachers in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The sample size for the study was 132 teachers. They were selected by systematic sampling technique. The study utilized a validated questionnaire that was designed by the researcher.

From the data collected in the study, the causes of inadequate sleep among secondary school teachers include: Late night preparations for next teaching activities, Hot/cold environment, Noisy environment, Teachers staying up late to either socialize or watch TV, Teachers who are parenting stay up late attending to their young children late into the night. While the perceived effects of inadequate sleep among secondary school teachers include; Weakened immunity, Changes in body weight, Decreased academic performance, Sleep deprivation affects the part of the brain that helps to make informed decisions, Hypertension, Heart failure, Shortened life expectancy, Risk for diabetes, Poor balance, Trouble with thinking and concentration.
