ABSTRACT
One of the means by which music is used functionally is the therapeutic use of music. This study discussed Olokun music in relation to its cathartic effect on the musicians and participating audience members, highlighting the performance processes, the musical instruments used, the performing techniques employed, and the overall essence of Olokun music. The study was based on the interview of Mr Osahon Obakpolor - the Priest of a Bini Olokun troupe, who served as respondent. The Findings from the study reveals that musicians and participating audience members at performances of Olokun music derive emotional release when they actively participate in the actualization of an Olokun performance. The study concludes that contemporary Africans should explore the therapeutic benefits of their traditional musical genres, such as Olokun music, which has proven to be beneficial for instance, in the purgation of emotions and expression of feelings. The study recommends that the therapeutic benefits of traditional music should be publicized through the mediumity of social media platforms as means of reaching most especially, the young populations in Africa who are extricating themselves from their cultural practices.
