ABSTRACT
The study sought to investigate the career opportunities available for graduates of English and Literature graduates in Nigeria. The research using University of Benin graduates as a case study. Descriptive survey research design was used in the study. The Instrument for data collection was a questionnaire. The sampled population was selected purposely by selecting 2 sessions from the sampled five sessions of the University. Data was analyzed using percentage and frequency count. Validity of the instrument was measured and assessed by the project supervisor and eight lecturers from the eight department of Faculty of Education to ensure its suitability to retrieve or collect information needed for the study.
The findings revealed that English and Literature is a relevant course and its graduate has a wide range of career path to choose from such as: writing, teaching, editing, publishing, Journalism and so on but they aren’t well informed about this. Also, some of the course content is outdated because a low number of graduates utilize the knowledge in their chosen field.
From the findings, it was recommended that the English and literature course relevance should be publicized and that the curriculum be reviewed to fit the present work place.
