ABSTRACT
This study investigates the benefits of skill acquisition for retirees in Egor Local Government Area of Edo State. Six (6) research questions were raised to guide the study. A sample size of 200 retirees were used for the study using a multi-stage sampling procedure. Four communities were selected out of 16 communities in Egor Local Government Area, and 50 respondents were selected from each of the four (4) communities using accidental sampling technique. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as frequency count, simple percentage and mean score analysis. Findings of the study revealed that retirees in Egor Local Government Area have shown significant effectiveness in the benefits of skill acquisition. It was further revealed that adult education initiatives have contributed to broader community development in Egor Local Government Area, by equipping adults with relevant skills and knowledge, these programmes have fostered community resilience and capacity building, leading to sustainable development outcomes. It was recommended that skill acquisition promotes active aging and reduce social isolation among retirees in Egor Local Government Area. It was further recommended that retirees should develop relevant skills that can lead to increase income, job satisfaction and entrepreneurial success.
