THE BENEFITS AND CONSTRAINT OF ADULT EDUCATION PROGRAMMES IN PRISONS (A CASE STUDY OF OKO PRISION IN BENIN CITY

ABSTRACT

This study investigates the Benefits and constraints of adult education programmes in Oko Prison in Benin City, Edo State Five (5) research questions were raised to guide the study. A sample size of 200 students which represents 10% of the entire total number of ninety-four (94) respondents consisting of eighteen teachers/facilitators and seventy-six inmates were purposively selected and used for the study. The questionnaire was designed and validated by experts in the department of Adult and Non-formal Education, Faculty of Education, University of Benin. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistical techniques such as tables, frequency counts, and simple percentages. The findings of the study revealed that various forms of adult education programmes for prisoners in Oko prison in Benin City are: Health Education Programmes for Prisoners, Basic Literacy and Prisoners' Reformation, Recreation, Leisure and Prisoners' Self-Development and Skill Acquisition and Vocational Education. It was also revealed that Adult education programmes for prisoners help prisoners to acquire skills while they are in prison, reading and writinghelp to reduce moral decadence in their behaviour and restored moral decencies such as love, sympathy and hope, helping them to imbibe the spirit of cooperation and forgiveness and it helps prisoners to acquire skills while they are in the prison. It was also recommended that The Federal Government of Nigeria should float a Prison Development Trust Fund (PDTF) to fund the prisons in the area of vocational and formal education. In other words, the education of prison inmates should receive closer government attention financially and otherwise. It was further recommended that the Nigerian Prisons Service should create public awareness programmes through the mass media on the role of prison and its rehabilitative roles. This in the long run will improve the image of our prisons and also provide a platform for more sensitization on prison education.
