ABSTRACT
This study examines elderly abuse in homes in Ogbe, Oredo LGA, Edo State. The goals were to assess Ogbe elder abuse prevalence and types. Determine Ogbe elder abuse risk factors and causes. Assess community understanding about elder abuse. Prevent community elder abuse using interventions and tactics. Increase community awareness and education regarding elder abuse. The Social Exchange hypothesis provided underlying information and awareness that elder abuse may occur when perceived care or support costs outweigh perceived advantages for the caregiver. A questionnairebased survey was used to collect data. Elder abuse is common in Ogbe society, and financial abuse and neglect are the most common kinds. Children, extended families, and relatives committed most elder abuse in the community.In Ogbe, men and women were abused equally. (ii) That economic factors and community ignorance of elder abuse are the main causes. Economic difficulty among families contributes to elder abuse in homes, and societal regard and disrespect for elders influence communal elder abuse. (iii) Ogbe community awareness of elder abuse is minimal. The best way to avoid elder abuse in Ogbe is through education and awareness campaigns. (i) Education and awareness programs should be held to educate older adults, caregivers, family members, and professionals about elder abuse, its signs, risk factors, and prevention.(ii) The government should increase legal protections for the elderly by enforcing strong punishments for abusers and enacting legislation that prioritize their rights and safety. (iii) The government should give counseling, legal aid, and financial aid to elderly abuse victims and those at danger. Seniors should also have social engagement programs to reduce isolation and provide assistance.
