ABSTRACT

This study was designed to examine the assessment of adoption and effectiveness of online counseling for students in the University of Benin. To guide this study, four (4) research questions were raised. The descriptive survey research design was used in conducting the study and the population was 150 university students from different faculties. The instruments for the study were self-structured questionnaires by the researcher. The validity of the instrument was established by giving the research instrument to the researchers’ supervisor and two other experts in the field of the research study. The data obtained from the questionnaire were subjected to analysis using mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study based on the questions raised revealed that factors, such as convenience, accessibility, confidentiality, and effectiveness, are considered significant drivers for students considering online counseling services. Also, it indicates that students have a favorable opinion of online counseling as a practical means of resolving mental health issues. The study also discloses the importance of technological infrastructure in making the adoption and use of online counseling beneficial and effective. It also highlights the role of internet connectivity, software usability, and device compatibility in enhancing the delivery and accessibility of mental health support services. It was recommended that in order to guarantee the efficient and effective provision of online counseling services, the institution should fulfill its responsibility of offering appropriate technological foundation and assistance. Additionally, it was recommended that the institution should attempt to implement online counseling in order to reach a larger student body and promptly aid those who require it, given the rising demand for mental health support among students. Use a variety of platforms, such as the university website, student portals, social media, and orientation programs, to prominently promote the online counseling services. Give clear directions on how to use the platform and make appointments.
