THE APPLICATION OF THE INTERNET OF THINGS (IOT) IN THE DIGITIZATION OF LIBRARY SERVICES IN JOHN HARRIS LIBRARY IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study focuses on The Application of the Internet of Things (IOT) in the Digitization of library services. The study goals were focused on The Application of the Internet of Things (IOT) in the Digitization of library services in John Harris Library in Edo State, The potential areas where Internet of Things (IOT) technologies can be applied to effective delivery of libraries services in John Harris Library in Edo State. This study adopted the descriptive survey research design. The data collected was also analyzed using descriptive statistics. The findings from the study indicated that there are several impacts of Internet of Things (IOT) technologies on library services in John Harris Library in Edo state. Security and privacy, accuracy in comprehension, hacking, cost for the purchase of IOT technologies, system development, user training and existence of physical libraries are the challenge of the application of internet of things in the digitization of library services in John Harris Library Edo State. Based on the results, it was recommended adequate training should be organized by the library, for its staff so as to be able to understand the complex technologies involved with the internet of things, the cost implications of acquiring the machines and objects relating to internet of things are quite enormous, thereby making it difficult for libraries to deliver its services promptly. It is pertinent to state that, the importance of budget in the library to acquire the technologies associated with internet of things shouldn‟t be handled with levity. As a result of its importance, proper budget should be put in place for its acquisition so as to deliver library service promptly and Security of user(s) data should be put into proper consideration because hackers have different means of scouting for the library patron‟s data, most especially the high profile personality, it is the duty of the library to protect such user data, the infusion of virus into the system is a common means to access the data of the library users. Proper measure should also be taken to prevent such malicious act.
