ABSTRACT
Most people in Nigeria no longer understand that costumes and makeup goes beyond attitudes of beautification, due to this and other factors, it is uncommon to see people pay adequate attention to makeup as a form of visual communication. A 400 level Costume and makeup production of the 2020/2021 academic session was observed and certain obstacles and challenges were faced in the cause of the study. The makeup of characters were not well projected, due to the fact that it was a student practical production. This study focused on the effectiveness in the usage of costume and the application of makeup in the Animal characters in the production. The aim of this research is to delineate and enhance visual stereotypes or clichés using makeup as a tool for visual communication to be readily understood by the audience or viewers; to heighten visual and observational skills; to create professionalism in the application of makeup and costume in interpreting animal characters through non-verbal means. The findings revealed that, the costume design process begins with a careful study of the screenplay. The importance of makeup in theatre has enhanced the role of characters. The study recommends that people should pay more attention to costumes and makeup as forms and elements of visual communication. The selection and use of costume and makeup should be dictated by the directorial concept these choices of costume and makeup should add aesthetic value to the actor’s role.
