Abstract
This study investigated the application of Information and communication technology to the teaching and learning of economics In secondary schools In ovia North East Local Government Area Of Edo State. In order to achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were formulated to guide the researcher.
Descriptive Survey research design was adopted for the investigation while the population was five thousand four hundred and thirty nine (5439) senior secondary school students in Ovia North East Local Government Area. The sample was 100 respondents made up of students from the five (5) selected schools who were composed through proportionate random sampling technique from the study population. Relevant data were collected from the sample through personal contact method of administration of copies of researchers’ made of Application Of Information And Communication Technology To The Teaching And Learning Of Economics In Secondary Schools In Ovia North East Local Government Area Of Edo State.
Questionnaires (AIACTTALESSQ). The data collected were presented in Tables and analyzed using descriptive statistics comprising of mean. A criterion of mean score of 2.5 was used as the benchmark for the purpose of decision making.
The findings from data analyzed include: The level of application of ICT in teaching and learning economics in senior secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area in Edo State is low. Teachers find it difficult to apply ICT in teaching in the class; Students' perception of the application of ICT in teaching and learning of economics is high. Also, the application of ICT has so many benefits and most students are inclined to it usage. Furthermore, Constraints to the application of ICT in teaching and learning of economics are high. They include; unavailability of ICT facilities, lack of adequate skills ICT on the part of teachers, lack of funds in teaching school and the high cost of purchasing computers in schools. Based on the findings, some recommendations were made which include: The application of ICT in teaching and learning economics should be encourage by all stockholders in education especially economics teachers; Workshops and training should be organized to train economics teachers to be proficient in the application of ICT; Attitude of teachers and students towards the use of ICT should be boosted through counselling and provision of ICT resources for the teaching and learning economics.
