ABSTRACT

This study analyses language use in Asake’s music. Asake is a Nigerian music artiste who got into the mainstream two years ago and it has been observed that his music relies a lot on social, figurative and contextual meanings. These are what I focused on during the  course of this project. For this study, I employed pragmatics to focus on the context and intention behind his language use, considering how the song lyrics communicate beyond their literal meaning and to create specific interpretations based on the musical and social context. I also analysed the relationship between language use and social factors, examining how the artist’s identity, background and target audience influence his language choice. I also made use of critical discourse analysis(CDA) to examine his ideologies about the Nigerian people and society and how they are constructed and challenged through language in music, focusing on lyrics, metaphors and word choice. Lastly, I also focused on how music and language reflect and shape broader cultural norms, values and power structures.
