ABSTRACT

This research delves into the critical analysis of the adoption and impact of sustainable land management practices in reducing Land degradation and promoting sustainable agriculture in Nigeria. It investigates the correlation between the adoption of sustainable land management practices, the reduction of land degradation, and the promotion of sustainable agriculture within the Nigerian context. The study employs a survey research approach, the data was collected from 280 students from the faculty of Agriculture University of Benin, Benin city. 20% of the population which comprises of 56 students were randomly selected using simple sampling technique in. Four research questions were raised to guide the study. The instrument used for data collection was a questionnaire which was personally administered by the researcher. The instrument was validated by the supervisor and 2 expert from the Department of Crop Science and Soil Science, faculty of Agriculture. The reliability of the instrument was determined using the test re-test method. The data collected was analyzed using frequency count, Percentage, mean and standard deviation. The findings of the study reviews that proper implementation of various sustainable land management techniques such as agroforestry, crop rotation organic farming has shown to be important in enhancing soil fertility and x promoting crop productivity, the adoption of sustainable land management practices leads to improved crop yields and diversified income sources hence promoting sustainable agriculture in Nigeria. The research provides recommendations for policymakers, agricultural practitioners, and stakeholders to enhance sustainable agricultural practices while mitigating land degradation in Nigeria. The study recommended comprehensive educational programs to educate farmers on the benefits of sustainable land management practices. Government should invest in infrastructural developments such as irrigation system and access roads to encourage sustainable agricultural practices. The Government should provide financial support and incentives for farmers such as subsidies, access to credit facilities to encourage into proper adoption of sustainable land management practice.
