ABSTRACT
The prevalence of asthma has significantly increased over the past 3 decades. Asthma is a complex inflammatory disorder of the lung that is characterized by bronchoconstriction, lung tissue inflammation, and airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR). Medicinal plants have continued to point out their effectiveness and dominant role in the health care system and therefore the recognition and development of healthful plants are on the increase principally in developing countries where herbs have continued to be their major supply of the drug. The aim of this present study is to investigate the activity of Adansonia digitata leaf extract in the ratio of granulocyte to white blood cells in the trachea of ovalbumin induced asthma in guinea pigs. For this investigation, we obtained, fed, and sensitized some guinea pigs with ovalbumin solution in order to induce respiratory distress with asthma symptoms. After which the animals were sacrificed and the count of granulocytes and white blood cells were determined using the trachea obtained from this animals. The result showed showed significant differences and no significant difference (P<0.05) when different groups were compared. This suggests that Adansonia digitata has an effect on the counts of granulocytes and white blood cells in the trachea.
