ABSTRACT
Playwriting is an art or technique of writing plays, and it is the work or profession of a playwright. Being a playwright gives you the privilege and opportunity to change the negative prevailing narrative with your script . The creative works of a playwright makes him relevant to his society; he is sometimes seen as a social critique, commentator, a prophet, a propagandist, a teacher , an educator, an entertainer, a reformer, a crusader, a seer. and even a politician. In today’s world where plays are a driving force of society, it has become common knowledge that these said plays can become a sense of hope to those who cannot speak for themselves or fight their battles themselves. Playwriting is not just a form of writing of plays that pleases the masses or only looks at the good sides of society but it is also a medium to enlighten, teach and be a voice to a voiceless society. According to Hamilton 97, “playwriting is a mirror of the society”. By the above statement by Clayton Hamilton, it suggests that playwriting pictures whatever it sees or captures and reflect same on the pages of the scripts. In resent times, we have witnessed a proliferation of playwrights who have used their works as a medium for political revolution and emancipation. A prominent playwright whose selected works talks about political revolution is Femi Osofisan. Following the tradition of African Drama's commitment to social issues, Osofisan berates all the tiers of government and the public office holders for the country's economic woes and the general poverty level of Nigerians. The concerns of his work is therefore, an intense sociological and political exploration of Osofisan's plays that satirize and lampoon the seemingly legalized practice of bribery, corruption and emancipation in Nigeria.
