TENSE ERRORS IN ENGLISH ESSAYS OF SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study titled “A study of Tense Errors in the Written English Essays of SS I students of Egor Local Government Area was conducted to find out tense errors and the essay in the English written essays of SS I students. A written test was administered to the students. The population for the study was 13 public schools in Egor Local Government Area of Edo state from which three schools were selected (Uselu Government Secondary School, Eweka Government Secondary and Uwelu Government Secondary School ). This study takes a proper literature review on the gender differences asccioated with writing. it will be of utmost interest to know that one's gender has alot to do with how on express itself in writing,for the males they lack expression in words but for the female they take their time to put down every thing they feeling in words giving them a upper hand over the males in writing. From the three schools, samples of 60 pupils were chosen using a random sampling procedure. Inferential statistics were utilized to examine the data and provide answers to the study's research questions. In research question one, it was found that female students made fewer mistakes with the tenses in their written English essays than did their male counterparts. In research question two, it was discovered that male students made fewer mistakes with essay format than did their female counterparts. In research question three, it was discovered that male students made fewer mistakes with essay technique than did their female counterparts. In light of these findings, it was advised that English language instructors correct students' mistakes as soon as they are made, whether they occur in speaking or writing.
