ABSTRACT

          This study investigates tense errors in English essays of students in selected secondary schools listed, Asoro Grammer School, Ogbe Senior Secondary School, Christian Education Centre and Garrick Memorial Secondary School in Egor Local Government, Edo State. This work identifies the level of students competence in the use of different tense forms in expressions as well as the extent to which the problem of wrong use of tense affect the overall ability of the students to effectively communicate. The script collected from the student of above mentioned schools was used as source for data to examine the causes of tense errors and to identify the errors in the essay of the students and the result of this study shows that there exists poor knowledge of the English tense firms in the written English of these students, the theoretical frame work for this study is Reichenbach’s theory of tense and its application to English. The study draws a relevant conclusion and suggestions on how to remedy problems encountered by students on the use of English tense forms to express different actions and affairs.
