ABSTRACT

Temperature measurement is a fundamental parameter in various industrial, scientific, and environmental applications. Accurate and reliable temperature sensing technologies are critical for ensuring the safety, efficiency, and quality of processes and systems. Fiber optic sensor technology has emerged as a promising solution for temperature measure ement due to its unique advantages, including immunity to electromagnetic interference, high sensitivity, and the ability to cover a wide temperature range. This project aims to develop and demonstrate a temperature measurement system based on fiber optic sensor technology. The proposed system utilizes the principle of optical fiber's response to temperature changes, enabling precise and distributed temperature monitoring. The results from the spectral analysis fitting curve in Full Width at Half Maximum show a single sharp peak of about 0.01dB, with a frequency of 0.235Hz for MMF, while a SMS fibre cable at the same temperature recorded a sharp peak of about 0.038dB with a frequency of 0.235Hz and another peak of 0.021dB with a frequency of 0.345Hz at low temperature of about 5oC. Also, FWHM shows a broad peak of about 0.18dB, with a frequency of 0.29Hz for MMF, while a SMS fibre cable at the same temperature recorded a sharp peak of about 0.29dB with a frequency of 0.195Hz and another sharp peak of 0.155dB with a frequency of 0.41Hz at high temperature of about 280C. This shows and confirms report from previous literature on the sensitivity of the SMS structure.
