ABSTRACT

The performance ratio of solar panels decreases with latitude because of temperature. Given the geographical location of Benin City, there is a need to study the distribution of photovoltaic energy potential considering the effect of irradiation and ambient temperature on PV system performance. This project aims to investigate the impact of temperature on solar system performance. Moreover, the project employs a quantitative method of research. It is also supported with simulation to predict the performance of a solar system. Preliminary results of our research show that temperature has a significant impact on the output power production of solar panels. The operating temperature affects the electrical efficiency as well as the power output of a PV module although the electrical performance is primarily influenced by the material of PV used. Further research and simulation showed the performance of the solar system decreases with increasing temperature of its surroundings leading to the conclusion that solar cells perform better in cool sunny environments than in high temperature environments.
