ABSTRACT
This study was carried out to determine the tear quantity and tear stability amongst patients who were diagnosed of myopia, hyperopia, myopic astigmatism and hyperopic astigmatism of ± 0.25D and above, between November 2021 and November 2022 in Optometry teaching clinic of the University of Benin, Benin City. A prospective observational study involving 104 participants, made up of 60 males and 44 females within the age range of 16 to 26 years, was conducted. Schirmer test II and Invasive tear breakup time test were then carried out on the participants. Data from this study was analyzed using one way ANOVA as processed by SPSS Version 22.0. The mean tear quantities were as follows (myopia = 21.48mm/5min ±3.04, hyperopia = 19.58mm/5min ± 3.59, myopic astigmatism = 19.31mm/5min ±3.86 and hyperopic astigmatism = 18.8333mm/5min ±3.71). Results showed that there was no statistically significant difference among them; p > 0.05. The results for mean tear stability were (myopia = 20.44s ±3.81, hyperopic astigmatism = 19.72s ±3.29, hyperopia = 19.08s ±3.78 and myopic astigmatism = 18.74s ±3.77). Results showed that there was no statistically significant difference among them; p > 0.05.
