TEACHING STRATEGIES PREVALENT IN KINDERGARTEN CLASSROOMS AND PUPILS’ ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the teaching strategies prevalent in kindergarten classrooms and pupils academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State. Also of interest in this study was the relationship between the teaching strategies prevalent in kindergarten classes and pupils academic performance based on location, size of school, age of school and experience of teacher. To guide this study, eight research questions 9 were raised, Two were answered directly while six were formulated into hypotheses and tested at 0.05 level of significance. This study was a descriptive survey research which adopted the correlational research design. The population was made up of all the teachers in kindergarten classes in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. The sample size was  schools selected through random sampling technique. The instrument used to collect the data was a questionnaire. The data collected were analyzed using mean, standard deviation, Pearson rand fisher z statistics. The results includes that play based teaching strategy, Demonstration teaching strategy, look and say method and conventional method are prevalent in kindergarten classes more than story telling teaching strategy. Based on the findings, the following recommendation were made among others. Kindergarten class teachers need to be aware of the various teaching strategies. They need to know how to use these teaching strategies to make the teaching and learning process more lively and effective. Seminars, conferences and workshops can help achieve this.
