TEACHING METHODS REQUIRED BY WOODWRK TEACHERS

ABSTRACT

This study was conducted using descriptive survey research to determine the teaching methods required by Woodwork teachers to improve students’ practical Skills in Technical Colleges in Lagos and Ogun States. Four research questions guided the study. Three null hypotheses were tested at the probability of 0.05 level of significance.

A structural questionnaire wasdeveloped from the related literature reviewed for the study. The questionnaire was validatedby three experts. The questionnaire was tested for reliability using t-testand the result showed a coefficient of 0.81. Copies of the questionnaire were administered on 68 respondents to obtain data and same were returned. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation to answer the research questions and t-teststatistics to test the null hypotheses.

The findings of the study showed that woodwork teachers required teaching methods for improving students’ practical skills in Technical Colleges in Lagos and Ogun States. Recommendations made included the need for Lagos and Ogun States governments to make effort to provide enough in-service training programmes for woodwork technology teachers. Such in-service technical training programme should be in form of workshops, post-graduate programmes, seminars, conferences and any other forms of training that will assist the teachers of woodwork in improving their strategies, Improving practical teaching should be prioritized in the schools and practical lesson time must be increased to give more room for the students to practice the given tasks instead of making the theoretical.
