TEACHERS’ QUALITY AND ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS

ABSTRACT

This study was designed to ascertain Teachers’ Quality and Academic Performance of Secondary School Students in Integrated Science in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State.

The population for this study includes all integrated science teachers from the public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. Integrated Science teachers from the 14 public junior secondary schools and the 53 private secondary schools in Oredo LGA, Edo State made up the population of the study. A total of 42 respondents from were sampled for this study. The ballot procedure was used to select respondents from the respective senior secondary schools which made the sample size of this study. The instrument to be used in this study is the questionnaire titled “Influence of The Quality of Integrated Science Teachers on the Performance of Secondary School Students in Integrated Science (IQISTPSSSIS)”.Data was analyzed using the statistical tool of mean and standard deviation was used to analyze the data collected. The mean rating of 2.50 was used for decision point.

            Findings revealed that teachers' academic qualification affects secondary school students’ academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, teachers’ teaching experience affects secondary school students’ academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, teachers’ attitudes affects secondary school students’ academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State, and teachers’ method of teaching affects secondary school students’ academic performance in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The study recommended that there should be a general reform of teacher education in all teacher-training institutions and government should put up a strategy of checking the proliferation of schools in the country to ensure the standard is not compromised.
