TEACHERS’ QUALIFICATIONS ON STUDENTS’ FINANCIAL ACCOUNTING IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS OVIA NORTH EAST LGA OF EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

This study was to identify the Teachers Qualifications on Student’s Academic Performance in Financial Accounting in Secondary Schools, in Ovia North East LGA of Edo State. Five government secondary schools were sampled for the study. The instrument used for data collection was questionnaire, which was developed and administered to students. The data from their responses were analyzed with the use of simple percentage.

The results revealed that a quality teacher is one who has a positive effect on student learning and development and produce quality students, and also there is a relationships between teacher qualification and student's performance and students learn better when teachers are masters of the subject area, Lecture and discussion methods of teaching are the best for teaching accounting and teaching with a variety of teaching methods tends to confuse the students. The finding also revealed that there are lacks of ICT facilities and the usage of instructional materials influences student's performance, and finally it revealed It was also observed that a good teacher should not be judge by their sex but Male teachers are more experienced in the teaching of accounting, also the success of any educational system depends largely on the experience of teachers.

Based on the findings it is therefore recommended that teaching qualification must be seen as a pre-condition for entry into the teaching profession, the Federal Government's efforts in the professionalization of teaching through the establishment of the Teachers' Registration Council (TRC) is in the right direction and should be enforced, and for the professional growth of teachers, conferences, seminars, workshops, pre and in-service training programmes should be given adequate attention by the Ministry of Education, State and Federal Government.
