ABSTRACT
The study investigated teachers’ perception on the problems associated with the effective teaching of English Language in public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City of Edo State. Four research questions were raised to guide the study.
The study adopted descriptive survey research design method. The population of the study was a total number of all teachers in the fourteen (14) public secondary schools in Oredo Local Government Area, Benin City. The sample size for this study was a total number of sixty (60) teachers adopted by the use of simple random sampling method. The data retrieved from respondents were analyzed using percentages and frequency tables.
From the findings of the study, it was discovered that most secondary school teachers are not qualified enough to teach the subject. Also, it was realized that there was absence of instructional materials for the teaching of English language, including English Language Laboratory. It was also realized that poor funding posed a major challenge to schools for the purchase of instructional materials and as well for the organization of teaching training programmes. Therefore, upon the above findings, it was recommended that schools should endeavor to employ teachers with appropriate degree qualifications for English Language teaching in schools. Also, it was recommended that teachers should endeavor to attend workshops and seminars in order to further develop them on their pedagogical approach to teaching, and how to employ the use of technology in teaching. Lastly, it was recommended that teachers should ensure to make use of instructional materials whilst teaching students.
