TEACHERS PERCEPTION ON THE INFLUENCE OF TEACHING METHODS ON STUDENTS ACHIEVEMENT IN BIOLOGY IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT

ABSTRACT

The study was carried to investigate the teachers perception on the influence of teaching methods on students achievement in Biology in Benin metropolis. Three (3) research questions and were raised to guide the study. The method adopted by the researcher is the descriptive survey research design. A review of related literature was carried out. A total of one hundred fifty teachers in public and private Secondary school in Benin metropolis constituted the population study sample.

The instrument used for gathering data from the selected sample was a questionnaire. The reliability of the instrument was established at 0.72 using Cronbach statistics. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics in form of frequency, percentages and mean.

The study revealed that, teacher's teaching methods influences student's achievement in learning of Biology. Most of the factors that influences the use and selection of teaching methods by teachers are; Instructional materials, student's interest, class size, and also to enhance student's understanding. The use of diverse teaching method increases student's interest in learning of biology. It was recommended that; various teaching method should be used as a method of teaching in Biology in classroom in senior Secondary Schools, students should be thought using different method so that they will be able to exchange ideals and understand. Government should ensure that Biology teachers who lack the knowledge and competence for using other method of teaching should be equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge.
