TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION ON THE CAUSES AND EFFECTS OF INDISCIPLINE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS IN AJEROMI-IFELODUN LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA OF LAGOS STATE.

ABSTRACT

This study assessed teacher’s perception on the causes and effects of indiscipline among secondary school students in Ajeromi-Ifelodun local government area of Lagos State. It explores the concept of indiscipline as well as the causes and effects of indiscipline. This study used a descriptive research design. The population of the study comprised all the teachers in public secondary schools in Ajeromi-Ifelodun local government area of Lagos State. The sample of the study was 50 teachers. The reliability of the questionnaire was ascertained using Test-Retest method. Thereafter the Pearson product coefficient (Pearson) was used to determine its level of reliability. A correlation of 0.85 was obtained and it showed that the instrument was reliable. The major findings of this study revealed that: poor home backgrounds contributed to the indiscipline of secondary school students; the government contributed to indiscipline among students; mass media and social networking sites contributed immensely to the causes of students’ indiscipline; peer pressure influenced indiscipline among secondary school students.

Based on this findings, the following recommendations were made:

That members of the society must be informed of the causes of indiscipline among these students and should redress these issues, not eliminating corporal punishment but to devise other means if corporal punishment does not work out.

That parents should try to spend time with their children and deal with disciplinary issues; talks and orientation should be given to the general public to curb the prevailing causes and effects of indiscipline among students.
