TEACHERS’ PERCEPTION OF STRESSORS ON THEIR JOB PERFORMANCE AMONG SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHERS IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA, EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate teachers’ perception of stressors on their job performance in Edo State. Specifically the study is designed to investigate if there is a significant difference in the level of teachers’ perception of class population, insufficient school facilities and work overload as stressors on their job performance. To achieve this, nine research questions were raised, three were answered while six were hypothesized and tested at 0.05 alpha level. The design used for this study was survey design. The population of this study consists of six hundred and forty two (642) teachers from the fourteen (14) public secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. A sample size of hundred and eight teachers was selected using multistage technique. The research instrument used is questionnaire. The instrument was validated by experts in the department of Educational Evaluation and Counselling psychology and Cronbach Alpha statistical method was used to determine the reliability of the instrument given a reliability coefficient of 0.68. In answering research questions 1, 2, and 3, the mean scores of the respondents was used while Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to analyse hypotheses 1-6. The findings of this study revealed that there was a high level of teachers’ perception of stressors (class population, insufficient school facilities, and work overload) on their job performance. The study also revealed that there is no significant difference in the level of teachers’ perception of class population and work overload as a stressors on their job performance based on their age and year(s) of teaching experience. Furthermore, the findings revealed that there is a significant difference in the level of teachers’ perception of insufficient school facilities as a stressor on their job performance based on teachers’ age and year(s) of teaching experience. This study recommended that counselling centres should be x provided to counsel teachers who are faced with stress challenges. Also, adequate infrastructure and more staff should be employed to help curb the challenge of work overload.
