ABSTRACT

The aim of this study was to investigate teachers’ participation in school administration and their job performance in public senior secondary schools in Delta State. Seven research questions were raised, two were answered and five were hypothesized and tested at 0.05 level of significance.

This study is a descriptive survey design, which adopted the correlational approach. The population of the study was 5,950 teachers in 452 public senior secondary schools in Delta State. The sample for the study consisted of 595 teachers in the public senior secondary schools. The multi-stage sampling procedure was adopted for the study. Two instruments were used namely: Teachers’ Participation in School Administration Questionnaire and Teachers’ Job Performance Scale adapted from Delta State Annual Performance Evaluation (APE) Form. The internal consistency reliability of the instruments was conducted using twenty (20) principals and twenty (20) teachers who were drawn from Edo State and are not part of the actual study. A reliability co-efficient of 0.86 was obtained for Teachers’ Participation in School Administration and a reliability co-efficient of 0.90 was obtained for Teachers’ Job Performance. Data collected were analysed using, Mean score to answer research questions 1 and 2 while Pearson Product Moment Correlation was used to answer hypothesis 1 and Fisher’s Z Statistics was used to answer hypotheses 2 to 5.

The findings of the study revealed that Teachers’ Participation in School Administration and their Job Performance in Delta State public senior secondary school were high; the study also revealed that teachers’ participation in school administration and their job performance were not significantly related; also, there is no significant difference in the relationship between teachers’ participation in school administration and their job performance based on school size, school location, sex of teachers and work experience of teachers in public senior secondary schools in Delta state.
