TEACHERS’ MORALE AND JOB PERFORMANCE IN OREDO LOCAL GOVERNMENT AREA IN EDO STATE

ABSTRACT

The study investigated the relationship between teachers’ morale and job performance in public senior secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area of Edo State. The purpose was to find the relationship between Morale and Teachers job performance in Oredo Local Government Area. In order to achieve the objective of the study, five (5) research question were raised, two were answered and three were hypothesized and tested at alpha level of significance.

The study was a descriptive survey, which adopted a correctional research design. The population of the study comprised of two hundred and ninety-six (296) school teachers of Edo State. The sample was (25%) of the total population of school (teachers) using simple random sampling which gave a sample size of 74 teachers in the public senior secondary school in Oredo Local Government Area. The research instrument was two set of questionnaire titled Teachers’ Morale Questionnaire and Teachers’ Job Performance Questionnaire (TMQ $TJQ). The Face and content validity were carried out to ascertain the validity of the instrument while the test retest reliability was used to determine the reliability of the instrument. This gave an alpha value of   0.87 AND 0.79 for TMQ $ TJQ respectively. The mean and standard deviation were used to answer research question 1 and 2 while the Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient (PPMC) and Fisher’s Z were used to test the hypotheses.

The findings revealed that both teachers’ morale and job performance were high. In the same vein, it also shows a relationship between teachers’ morale and job performance. However, the study revealed that There was no significant difference in the relationship between teachers’ morale and teachers job performance based on gender and There was a significant difference in the relationship between teachers’ morale and job performance based on school size. It was also recommended that Government should make more effort to adequately motivate teachers. Parents, communities and students should accord respect to teachers, Principals should always involve teachers in decision that concerns the school and students. Parents and communities should appreciate teachers for job well done. and Government should also reduce the school size and make facilities and laboratories available for effective teaching and learning to take place.
