ABSTRACT

This study assesses the relationship between teachers’ job dissatisfaction and its influence on students’ academic performance in Upper Basic Schools in Orhionmwon Local Government Area, Edo State. Four research questions and two hypotheses were formulated for the study. A review of related literature was undertaken in other to discuss related concepts as explained by different authors. A descriptive research design was adopted for the study. The population of the study comprised of one hundred and fifty-six (156) teachers in fourteen (14) Upper Basic Schools in Orhionmwon LGA, Edo State, from which a sample of seventy-eight (78) were selected using simple random sampling technique. Data was collected using a structured questionnaire and analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. Findings showed that: High level of teachers’ job satisfaction as evidenced in teachers’ affirmation of inadequate remuneration package, lack of inservice training and workshops, allocation of workload more than normal requirement, inadequate infrastructural and instructional materials and delay in teachers promotion. It was recommended amongst others that: 1. Government at all levels should take the issue of teachers’ remuneration serious in other to improve their level of job satisfaction and policy-makers in the education sector should strengthen or make new policies that mandate teachers’ professional development through refresher courses, workshops, seminars and other platforms aimed at upgrading and exposing teachers to innovations in education. This will help boost their morale and improve their level of job satisfaction.
