ABSTRACT
This study is aimed at assessing teachers’ demographics and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Recognizing that teachers play a critical role in shaping students educational background, this study focuses on understanding how factors such as age, sex, qualification and experiences of teachers may influence student academic performance. To achieve the purpose of the study, four research questions were raised and examined. Data was collected from hundred (100) respondents randomly selected from ten (10) secondary schools in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. The questionnaire was the instrument for data collection. The descriptive survey research design was adopted for the study. An analysis of data was done using simple percentage and frequency count. The findings from the study which has the potentials of informing the educational policies and practices and also highlighting the importance of teachers demographics and its impact on students academic performance showed that there is relationship between a teachers’ qualification and student academic performance in public secondary schools’ in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. It was also concluded that there is a relationship between teachers’ experience and students’ academic performance in public secondary schools’ in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo State. Some of the recommendations made include that, to foster improved academic performance of secondary school students, government should give priority to the employment of professional and qualified teachers and ensure that such teachers are retained to enable them to acquire experience on the job. It was also recommended that in order to increase students’ academic performance, it is very important teachers are trained and retrained to be very qualified to educate students.
