ABSTRACT
Teacher's posses a strong power in their own capacity to direct the learner in becoming responsible citizen. The purpose of this study was to investigate teacher’s Competence and Students Academic Performance in Public Secondary School of Edo State. A survey research design was employed in this study. Five(5) research questions were raised to guide the study.
The target population of the study consist of six thousand five hundred and thirty four (6534) students both junior and senior secondary schools ,with sample of 2% of the population, amounted to a sample size of 131 students from 6534. 5% of the size, resulted to seven(7) public schools was selected from the Egor local government using the simple random sampling technique. A structured questionnaire and checklist was used for data collection. The questionnaire and checklist was validated by the researcher's supervisor and two other experts in the Department of Educational Management; while the test- re test reliability method was adopted to ascertain the reliability of the instrument. Data collected were analyzed using mean and standard deviation.
The study reveals that low income , misconduct of students , job replacement in distant area,negative attitude of colleagues ,house hold responsibilities affect teacher’s competence, that library , lack of frequent curricular review , over population,staff strike, poor relations between the university and government influences students academic performance it also reveals that out of the total enrollment of students majority performance well in mathematics than English. Based on the findings of the study, the following recommendations were made for the study:Teachers salary should be increased , they should not be replaced with a distant job, and colleagues should avoid negative attitude toward each other. In other to improve students academic performance, there should be frequent review of the curricular , over population, staff strike, poor relations between the university and government in school should be reduced . More qualified teachers should be employed in other to reduce the failure among students in exam,teachers should be encouraged to attend both short and long term trainings to have content knowledge of subjects taught and boost the quality of teaching in senior secondary schools. Government should ensure adequate selection of competent and qualified teachers to teach in senior secondary schools as well as coordinate teachers to attend subject panels in conferences; seminars and workshops to keep abreast with new teaching approaches.
