ABSTRACT
This study investigated Teachers’ characteristics and academic performance of preschool pupils in Oredo Local Government Area, Edo state. The study also sought to find out the level of teachers’ qualification, teachers’ experience and pupils academic performance. Three research questions were raised to guide the study. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. 100 teachers formed the sample of the study. The instrument titled “Teachers’ characteristics and pupils academic performance” was a self designed checklist by the researcher to collect data for the study. Data collected were analyzed using percentages and frequency counts. The following were among the findings: That majority of the preschool teachers had the required qualification of NCE, while 46.0% were highly qualified. This implies that the level of teachers’ qualification in preschools in Oredo Local Government Area was high. That majority of the preschool teachers had above five years of teaching experience, while 34.0% had less than five years. This implies that the level of teachers’ teaching experience in preschools in Oredo Local Government Area was high. That 4.0% of the preschool pupils failed and had low academic performance. 36.0% had moderate, while 56.0% had high level of academic performance. This implies that the level of pupils’ academic performance in preschools in Oredo Local Government Area was high. Based on the findings it was recommended that Parents should partner with teachers to enable the pupils attain high performance in their studies.
