ABSTRACT

This study is carried out to examine teachers’ awareness of students’ fundamental human rights and disciplinary practices in public secondary school Edo State. It assist managers in education in making policies, laws and rules that would respect the rights of students and provide a better school environment which in turn will augur well for the peace and security of the society. The population of the study was drawn from Edo Senatorial district which consist of four local government that consist of 138 schools and 1600 teachers. The study comprised a sample of 50 teachers and 7 schools.

Three research questions were raised. The descriptive survey and correlational research design was adopted for the study and the instrument used was a questionnaire. It was utilized in eliciting information from the respondents. A likert type scale was used to gather data which was analysed by mean, standard deviation and graph. The instrument was validated by two expert in the field, its reliability was ascertained using test retest method and an average value of 0.75 was established.

The findings of this study revealed that teachers’ level of awareness of students fundamental human right in public secondary schools’ in Edo State is low with a grand value of 7.20 and a prevalent disciplinary practices of corporal punishments infringed on the right of the students’. It also revealed that there was no significant relationship between teachers’ awareness of students’ fundamental human rights and disciplinary practices. From the findings and conclusion reached, it was recommended that all teachers should be educated on rights and legal implications of disciplinary practices and regular counselling activities should be organised by the school. Also principals should ensure that the disciplinary practice of reward is used more often than punishment.
