ABSTRACT

The study assessed the level of awareness and use of Mathematical games by Mathematics teachers in teaching in public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area. The purpose of the study was to ascertain the level of proficiency of Mathematics teachers in the use of Mathematical games in teaching as well as to determine the indeptiveness of knowledge in the use of Mathematical games in executing the instructional tasks in Mathematics.

Descriptive Survey research design was adopted by the study. The population of the study comprised of all Mathematics teachers in the twelve public secondary schools in Egor Local Government Area with a total number of 462 (four hundred and sixty two). The simple random sampling technique was adopted by the study to randomly select fifty teachers from five randomly selected schools to make up the sample for the study. A structured questionnaire titled:          Use and Awareness of Mathematical Games by Mathematics Teachers Questionnaire (GAMMUTQ) was used for data collection. The instrument was validated by the researcher’s supervisor as well as two other experts in the department of Curriculum and Instructional Technology (CIT), University of Benin.        A test re-test reliability method was used to establish the reliability of the instrument which yielded a coefficient of 0.75 while data collected were analysed using descriptive statistics such as simple percentages, frequency counts, mean and standard deviation.

Consequently, the study found that the level of Mathematics teachers’ proficiency was low to moderate as they were adequately equipped with the requisite skills for the use of Mathematical games in the instructional process. It was also found that teachers have poor knowledge on the operations of the Mathematical games which effectively hindered the use of these tools consistently. Based on the findings, it was recommended among others: teachers should be adequately equipped trained through in-service training to enhance their knowledge of Mathematical games, teachers should be exposed to the rudiments of Mathematical games by the frequent organization of symposias and seminars to accelerate their level of usage of these tools in the instructional process to mention but a few.
