ABSTRACT
The study investigated Teacher-Pupil Relationship and Pupils Academic Performance in Public Primary Schools in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State. The study sought to find out the type of relationship that existed between teachers and pupils, level of pupils academic performance and any relationship that existed between teacher-pupils relationship and pupils academic performance. To guide the study, three research questions were raised, two of them were answered while one was hypothesized and tested at 0.05 level of significance.
A descriptive survey research design and the correlational research design for the study. The population of study consisted of three thousand, two hundred and twenty one (3221) pupils from eighty-four (84) public primary schools in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State. A sample of four hundred and fifty one (451) pupils from twelve (12) public primary schools in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State which constituted fourteen (14) percent of the total population was purposively selected. Two (2) research instrument were used for this study. They were teacher-pupils relationship questionnaire (TPRQ) and Pupils Academic Performance Checklist (PAPQ). Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics (mean, standard deviation and percentage) and Pearson Product Moment Correlation Co-efficient at 0.05 level of significance.
The findings of the study showed that the type of relationship existed between teachers and pupils was the level of pupils academic performance was moderate and there is a significant between teacher-pupil relationship and pupils’ academic performance in public primary schools in Ovia South West Local Government Area of Edo State, it was recommended that teachers should be encouraged to build their personal relationship with pupils as this improve the state of pupils academic performance and pupils should be encourage to increase their study habit in order to boost their academic performance.
