ABSTRACT

Quinoline is an important class of heterocyclic compounds and their structural unit is widespread in alkaloids, therapeutics and synthetic analogues with interesting biological activities. In this study the synthesis of quinoline - n – oxide benzyl sulphide was carried. The synthesis procedure was carried out in four stages before arriving at the final products which are; Quinoline -1 – oxide, 4 nitroquinoline 1 oxide, 4 chloro- quinoline 1 oxide, Quinoline 1 oxide 4 thiouranium chloride, 4 thiobenzyl quinoline 1 oxide. The physical properties of the compound were measured which are; colour, percentage yield, melting point, retention factor, molecular weight and molecular mass were measured. Quinoline -1 – oxide, 4 nitroquinoline 1 oxide, 4 chloro- quinoline 1 oxide, Quinoline 1 oxide 4 thiouranium chloride and 4 thiobenzyl quinoline 1 oxide, all the compounds were solid at room temperature,  their colours were, brown yellow - brown  colourless light yellow orange red and colourless. Percentage yield for the compounds are 44.48%, 38.17%, 13.8%, 9.38% and 0.97%. Their melting point are         60 – 62oC, 153 – 154oC, 133 – 133.5oC,     165.5oC and 140 – 140.5 oC. Retention factor  for the compounds are 0.70,       0.85,  0.48, 0.70,   0.71 and 0.75. Molecular weight are 145.16, 190.16, 179.60,257.5818, 178.16 and 268.16.
